Another Kind of Dream Flying

-Yeow! Talk about a blast from the past.
Up until now, I’ve been sharing the magic of my dream flights, you know, the unaided ones where it’s just me and the sky. But let me tell you about another kind of flying I’ve dreamt about - the kind that involves some nifty flying contraption.
Now, unlike my real-life experiences in the cockpit, my dream flying machines were never airplanes. Nope, always something unique, often fueled by nothing but muscle power.
Regardless of how smooth the ride started, these dreams always took a twist:
- getting too close to a high-tension line
- realizing not enough room to make a turn
- wondering if there’s enough oomph to climb over it
- and maybe not enough space to dip below it What to do? Sometimes I’d veer left or right with mixed, often electrifying results.
After watching this video, crashing into those lines doesn’t seem as bad as I had dreamed.
And thank goodness it’s possible. Years ago, my son got tangled up in wires while learning to skydive. Fast forward to today, titanium-reinforced, he’s thriving and leaping off everything he can.
I’ve told him he lived through my nightmare, though I’m pretty sure he has no clue what I’m talking about. But hey, I’m just grateful there are better outcomes to this scenario than in my dreams.
I’ve scoured this video for the wire and never saw it. But those towers on the higher pass over the farmhouse? Noticed those for sure.

-My first and most favorite airplane.
Would I have run into them? Would you?
Definitely not me. Because after all those electrifying dreams, here’s my flying mantra:
- fly my planes higher than any wire
- overfly the area and plan the route first
- stick to the planned route
- fly without any distractions below 400โฒ agl
- any distraction or uncertainty - abort instantly A paramotor cruises less than 1/5 the speed of an airplane, so some numbers might change. But if I ever strap a motor on my back and take to the skies again, you can bet I’ll fly the same way.
Those dreams still linger. I know there’s a wire somewhere just waiting. ๐
