Beach Sand

Hey Beach Lovers! So, you know how maintaining those sandy shores and sturdy condos can be quite the taskon a pristine barrier island, right?
Well, here’s a little secret – it involves a touch of underwater sand mining magic! They pump that sandy goodness through a pipeline, creating a beach distribution network akin to nature’s own sprinkler system.
Behold this snapshot of our local beach – where the ship mines the sand, elevating the beach by about 10 feet and extending the shoreline out by roughly 100 feet. Voilà!

-Rebuilding a beach.
Under normal circumstances, the Gulf Stream Current acts like a sand-stealing bandit, whisking away half of it in a big storm and potentially all of it in a hurricane. Quite wild, isn’t it?
By day’s end, a substantial amount of sand has been moved, as depicted in this evening shot:

-It’s a 24/7 operation.
Now, I won’t sugarcoat it – this is an expensive, energy-intensive, and, let’s be honest, somewhat messy process. Why? Well, it’s the trade-off we make when condos replace mangroves on a barrier island. Nature has its own plans!
But hey, there are some fascinating unintended benefits:
- The sand brings along a feast for beach creatures, including mollusks and critters.
- You might stumble upon unique shells and fragments of coral to take home as souvenirs.
- Who knows, there might even be a piece of Spanish Armada treasure waiting to be discovered?
- And just maybe, old WWII artifacts could make a surprise appearance.
It’s the cost of maintaining an idyllic beach in paradise, isn’t it?

-South view.

-Two weeks later, the pipe is gone. Things are back to normal.
Now, the beach is more than twice as wide, safeguarding the vegetation and property. Nature and condos – are they learning to coexist? Not quite!
✨
Cheers, D 🌴🌊
