Cool Night Air
Greetings, enchanting souls! Picture this – it’s a mid-August evening here in South Florida. 🌙
The frogs, crickets, cicadas, and other nocturnal creatures, seeking respite from the daytime heat, are back, serenading the night with their magical tunes.
Subtropical nights are truly extraordinary. The air becomes crisp, nature’s symphony takes center stage, drowning out the monotony of civilization, and the night is imbued with the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers. Ah, the wonders of residing in a subtropical swamp!
Did you know that in the tropics, many plants save their blooms for the night? Most night blossoms are adorned in shades of white, emitting an incredibly potent, sweet, and heavy scent to attract pollinators.
While daytime flowers delicately perfume the air, the night bloomers? Oh, they command it!
Allow me to introduce you to a few of my cherished night bloomers:
One of my personal favorites, the Angel Trumpet, is a remarkable plant that not only blooms during the day but also emits a fragrance that evolves and intensifies late in the afternoon and evening, boasting a more spicy than flowery aroma.
Night Blooming Jasmine, true to its name, graces us with its presence solely under the cover of darkness. Its fragrance can become so potent that breathing almost feels like a luxury, persisting even through thunderstorms.
But let me recount last night – it was truly remarkable. We had eagerly awaited the blossoming of our Night Blooming Cereus for weeks. As it finally began to bloom around 10 PM, by midnight, it had unfolded into full splendor. Like many cacti, it showcased a stunning and intricate bloom, accompanied by a delicate, ultra-sweet, and unique fragrance. Believe me, it was well worth the anticipation!

By early morning, the bloom had bid its fond farewell.
Just another exhilarating day in the lives of a retired couple. And let me assure you, I’m thoroughly reveling in it. 🙂
