Green Sapote

Green Sapote

-Looks like what I bought.

Hey there!

Last July, I stumbled upon a rock-hard, olive-green fruit, almost the size of a small cantaloupe. Intrigued, I decided to give it a shot and bought one.

My pardner reminisced about trying a few of these in her childhood but wasn’t a big fan. She used to nick the skin and indulge when the layer underneath turned reddish. So, we watched, waited, and gave it a few more nicks over time.

Unveiling the Goodness

And voilà! Three days later, the knife finally met the fruit, unveiling a soft reddish-orange interior and a large, uniquely strange seed.

-Ripe Green Sapote.

Oh my goodness! Remember those holiday yams, loaded with brown sugar and sometimes topped with marshmallows? Now, imagine blending that with the best pumpkin pie filling. That’s exactly how this fruit tasted! It’s so sweet; it might be considered illegal or even sinful in some circles.

Turns out, a certain girl from way back disliked them for being too sweet. But let me tell you I know, who had a knack for raiding the sugar bowl, couldn’t comprehend such a thing.

Planting Seeds of Growth

Now, what to do with that giant seed? Plant it, of course! Check out how the Green Sapote sprouted and grew over the span of 4 months.

The Green Sapote plant turned out to be quite a beauty. And let me tell you, it’s the sweetest, most unique fruit I’ve ever tasted.
