Wildlife in My Backyard

-An occasional backyard guest - the bobcat.

Hey there!

Can you believe it? Our cozy city nest is like a hidden oasis for wildlife. A sneaky Bobcat has found the perfect chill spot beneath the Cassava. Today marks his second appearance, and let me tell you, these fellas are masters of hide-and-seek. A mere hint of human presence, and poof, they vanish.

My hunch? He’s been our silent neighbor for longer than we’ve caught sight of him.

Now, about our feisty squirrels. Picture this: a dozen of them engaged in daily wrestling matches over two bird feeders. A month ago, most vanished in the blink of an eye.

Currently, I spot one or two making cautious cameos. They’ve retreated to the trees, leaving the bird feeders untouched. Initially, I feared foul play, maybe a squirrel conspiracy. But I’ve got a theory now.

Oh, and the Bobcat? Not exactly a welcome committee for the local rabbit population either; they’re on the decline.

black vulture

-Black Vulture.

The usual silent choreographers of roadkill cleanup, the Black Vultures, gave me a heads-up that something strange was going on. Instead of their usual graceful circling, they erupted into a raucous symphony and scattered in all directions.

bald eagles

Looking skyward, I witnessed a Bald Eagle swoop through their formation, gracefully descending to about 100 feet above the ground before disappearing behind the tree canopy. Bad news for the squirrels once again!

Turns out, the Vultures were as shocked by the Bald Eagle cameo as I was. Two rare sightings in one morning!

Wyoming was my old stomping ground, where Bobcats are common yet elusive. Bald Eagles were a daily spectacle. But who’d have thought I’d encounter either in my Florida backyard?

It’s heartening to know these creatures can find a bit of tranquility away from Florida’s hustle and bustle. And this Wyoming gal certainly appreciates the serendipity.
