Yellowfin at the Farmer's Market

Yellowfin at the Farmer's Market

This time of year, the heat and humidity hit early. It’s a good idea to wrap up everything by 10 am and then just kick back for the rest of the day.

So, this morning, I decided to make an early visit to the Ft. Pierce farmer’s market. It’s been a while since I last went.

However, by the time we got there, the sun was already blazing. I opted to let my pardner do the shopping while I found a shady spot near the Marina to relax.

It’s a fantastic spot to escape the heat and crowd of the market, all while enjoying live music and watching boats, birds, and fish.

But today, something unexpected caught my eye. A group of large, open-ocean fish glided by:

  • about 10 feet away
  • just below the surface
  • as long as my leg
  • with two distinctive sickle-shaped fins
  • a row of yellow spikes to the tail
  • metallic silver-blue with yellow accents

What a stunning fish! Clearly, a high-speed predator far from their usual deep-sea habitat.

I had no clue what they were. A passerby suggested I try my luck and drop a line to catch some Yellowfin Tuna.

-If I had caught one, it might have looked like this.

Yellowfin Tuna at the farmer’s market! Not in the usual fresh, iced, and caught way I would have expected. But alive. Bursting with power and grace. Beautiful. Wild. Free.

At their whim, they could come and go as they pleased. Return to the deep ocean, perhaps thousands of wild miles away, or not.

While they could have filled my freezer if I caught them, they did something far better. They fed my spirit. What a delightful surprise!

Cheers, D 🌴🌊
